During a four-month internship at the Oficinas do Convento Association, a study was carried out with the aim of analysing the possibility of incorporating a byproduct from the Asseiceira Water Treatment Plant, known as sludge, into a ceramic paste. To this end, the sludge was first surface analysed, taking into account its physical and structural characteristics. Subsequently, samples with different ceramic compositions were produced using other raw materials available on site, together with the sludge under study, in order to assess the relevant functional characteristics after the drying and firing process (green-dry and dry-fired shrinkage, mechanical strength, water absorption and porosity). Finally, a third experiment was carried out to simulate the production of a product using the ceramic paste resulting from the previous experiments. In general, it was concluded that incorporating sludge into the ceramic paste studied is technically feasible. However, the feasibility of incorporating sludge into other ceramic pastes depends entirely on the characteristics needed to meet the requirements of the final product |
