O Museu Nacional de Etnologia (Nampula) foi inaugurado em pleno colonialismo português, numa altura (1956) em que a “portugalidade” tinha acabado de ser cunhada, com o objetivo de sublinhar o slogan do Estado Novo, “Portugal do Minho a Timor”, consubstanciado na ideia de que “Portugal não é um país pequeno”. De então para cá, o equipamento tem sofrido as vicissitudes relativas às transformações politicas que o país sofreu. Desde logo por se ter tornado independente e de ter determinado que a cultura devia estar ao serviço da “moçambicanidade”. Foi a troca de um essencialismo colonial por um outro com um recorte pós-colonial que, no entanto, teve que se adaptar à realidade social, deixando para trás um olhar uniforme sobre o país. Sendo diverso nas suas diferentes geografias, por conseguinte a “moçambicanidade” também o deveria ser, o que não deixa de ser um contrassenso. Atribui-se a Eduardo Mondlane a paternidade dessa “moçambicanidade” que o atual museu faz questão de sublinhar, muito por culpa do acervo sobre a cultura Makonde, que constitui o seu pilar mais forte, lembrando que a guerra de libertação que derrotou o colonialismo português, também teve por missão resgatar a identidade cultural dos moçambicanos. Um ideário que vive entre o corte com o colonialismo português e o socialismo “libertador” consequente. |

The National Museum of Ethnology (Mozambique) was inaugurated in full Portuguese colonialism, at a time (1956) when “Portugality” had just been coined, with the aim of underlining the slogan of the Estado Novo, “Portugal from Minho to Timor”, embodied in the idea that “Portugal is not a small coun- try”. Since then, the equipment has suffered the vicissitudes related to the political transformations that the country has undergone. First of all, for having become independent and for having determined that culture should be at the service of “Mozambicanity”. It was the exchange of a colonial essentialism for another one with a post-colonial profile that, however, had to adapt to the social reality, leaving behind a uniform look on the country. Being diverse in its different geog- raphies, therefore “Mozambicanity” should also be so, which is still a contradic- tion. Eduardo Mondlane is credited with the paternity of this “Mozambicanity” that the current museum is keen to emphasize, largely because of the collection on Makonde culture, which is one of its strongest pillars, remembering that the war of liberation that defeated Portuguese colonialism, also had the mission of rescuing the cultural identity of Mozambicans. An ideal that lives between the cut with Portuguese colonialism and the consequent liberating socialism.
