The Symbolism of the Circumambulation Ritual in Judaism and Islam - a comparative Study The circumambulation ritual is held in common by Judaism, where it is called "haqqâfâh", and Islam, where it is known as "tawâf". Hence it provides matter for an interesting comparative study capable of throwing light on the deeper significance of this ceremonial which seems to have originally been a rain ritual. The striking similarity of the common traits involved in its performance is also borne out by the mystical traditions of these two religions according to which the sevenfold procession around the central altar sanctuary symbolizes the integration of the Divine attributes into the worshipper's soul. The correspondance of these themes may derive from the archetypes of the human mind. Alternatively, the possibility of a Muslim influence on the Jewish ritual is not to be dismissed since the latter underwent liturgical consolidation only after the rise of Islam. |
