مستخلص: Adolescence is the most critical period in the development of depression. Prior research suggests that mastery is related to symptoms of depression. In addition, moderation tests indicated that the interaction between mastery and gender significantly predicted depression. Aim: This study aimed to identify whether there is a relationship between mastery and depression and if gender of the adolescent functions as a moderator in this relationship. Method: A sample of 197 Dutch adolescents (M = 14.27 years, SD = 0.45) completed the Children’s Depression Inventory regarding depression. The level of mastery was measured by the Pearlin Mastery Scale. Results: As expected, multiple regression analyses showed a significant relation between mastery and depression within adolescents. Additionally, gender presented as a moderator, with a stronger effect for women than for men. Conclusion: These findings suggest that mastery is related to depression and this relationship is moderated by gender. In the prevention and treatment of depression among adolescents, it may be beneficial to focus on increasing the level of mastery.
