The years between Paul Klee’s birth in 1879 to his death in 1940, was a period when artistic expression underwent the most dramatic change in the history of Western art. The emergence of each school represented a different declaration of independence. Whether or not the aim of these new schools was to create a new art that differed from the past, or an extreme manifestation of dissatisfaction with the secular world, and in the process revealing the artist’s inner world, all are testimony to the rich profusion and beauty of modern art. Modern art is unique for incorporating all these diverse art forms in its various works. In this thesis, the theme, “Naive Interest Image”, of Paul Klee will be extensively discussed, to show that modern painters, under the influence of “Primitive Art” and “child-like expression”, combine the elements of obscurity and integration in their creations. Paul Klee’s child-like approach can be perceived in two levels: the manifestation of forms and “inner need”. In the former, Klee absorbed the technique of “child-like painting” to “simplify” the outlines of an object, to present colors in an “abstract” style, and to “fill in the space” as children do when they draw. In the latter, he mastered the skill of creating “archetypes”, rich with the power to inspire imagination. The mutual influence of these two elements, exterior forms and inner spirit, is the true origin for the presence of “Naive Interest Image” in Klee’s works. Moreover, Klee’s emphasis on the form expressed in “child-like painting” and the special quality it embodies, has perfectly united his works with the theory of Nature.
