The presence of babies in social research has come late and continues to be marginal. Its incorporation has followed logics linked to the actors, knowledge, senses and practices that by it gained visibility. In this article we recognize two approaches that emerged from the concern to problematize early childhood and babies and that transcend disciplinary boundaries: the anticipatory approach and the experiential approach. In the first, the look on babies is set in their future, in the second, in their present. Both approaches are described, giving account of their subject and scope, the disciplinary perspectives and practices from which they are nurtured, the areas and actors involved. We reflect on their contrasts and points of articulation, their contributions and limitations, in pursuit of the construction of an interdisciplinary field that accounts for the diversity, complexity and historical-cultural nature of babies' lives. ; A presença dos bebês na pesquisa social foi tardia e continua sendo marginal. A sua incorporação seguiu lógicas vinculadas aos atores, aos saberes, aos sentidos e às práticas que por ela ganharam visibilidade. Neste artigo, reconhecemos duas aproximações que emergiram da preocupação por problematizar a primeira infância e os bebês e que transcendem os limites disciplinares: o enfoque antecipatório e o enfoque vivencial. No primeiro, o olhar sobre os bebês está posto no seu futuro, no segundo, no seu presente. Descrevem-se ambos os enfoques, dando conta do seu objeto e alcance, das perspectivas e práticas disciplinares das quais se nutrem, dos âmbitos e dos atores envolvidos. Refletimos sobre os seus contrastes e pontos de articulação, as suas contribuições e limitações, em prol da construção de um campo interdisciplinar que abranja a diversidade, a complexidade e o caráter histórico-cultural das vidas dos bebês. ; La presencia de los bebés en la investigación social ha sido tardía y continúa siendo marginal.
