الوصف: Ph.D. ; Despite extensive literature on social determinants of health status in China, few studies have addressed the health outcomes among rural elders under the eco-social theory. To fill this research gap, this dissertation examined the relationship between individual lifestyle, intergenerational support, community environment and health outcomes among rural elders. Interaction effects of individual, family and community level factors on health outcomes were also examined. The focus of this dissertation is on the application and discussions of eco-social theory, linking the impacts of individual, family and community factors to health outcomes. ; This research adopted a quantitative method design. The data was derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Hierarchical Models were used to investigate the association between lifestyle, intergenerational support, and community environment and health outcomes. ; The study confirmed the following findings. In individual level, physical activity was associated with better functional status, and less depressive symptoms. The study also found that less educated individuals benefited more from the improvement of lifestyle. In family level, this research confirmed that intergenerational support still played an important role in maintaining elders’ health outcomes. However, the association between intergenerational support and health outcomes was not significantly different among individuals with various levels of socioeconomic status. In community level, the study discovered that higher levels of community SES were associated with better health outcomes in terms of self-rated health status and depression. we learned that the effect size of physical activity on functional status was smaller among individuals living in communities with higher levels of SES. Living in communities with nursing homes, elders reported worse health outcomes which was against our hypothesis. There also existed moderation effects of factors in different levels. We ...
