Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a multifaceted and difficult-to-treat mental health condition that is associated with considerable personal and social distress. To effectively manage this disorder, accurate diagnosis and assessment are critical. This literature review examines the diagnostic criteria and assessment tools currently used to identify and diagnose BPD, and assesses their relative strengths and limitations. The DSM-5 is the primary diagnostic tool used for identifying BPD, but other diagnostic systems exist that offer alternate perspectives on characterizing the disorder. Numerous assessment tools have been developed to aid in the clinical and research settings to provide a thorough assessment of BPD symptoms and related features. These tools, which include observer ratings, structured interviews, and self-report measures, have unique benefits and drawbacks. Despite the difficulties involved in diagnosing and assessing BPD, continuing to refine our understanding of this complex condition is vital to improving patient outcomes and informing effective treatment. |
