الوصف: Context and objective. Although typhic aetiology is often linked to ileal peritonitis in tropical environment, bacteriological confirmation is far from usually established, due to lack of relevant diagnosis tools. The study aimed to identify Salmonella typhi strains involved in peritonitis following laparotomies in Kinshasa hospitals and to determine heir sensitivity to antibiotics. Methods. A cross-sectional analysis of data from samples of peritoneal fluid from patients suspected of peritonitis was conducted in 3 hospitals at Kinshasa. The microbiological analysis and sensitivity tests were performed at the ISTM-Kinshasa Microbiology Laboratory fot 73 samples. Results. Only 13 samples were found to be compliant. There were almost as many women (7) as men (6). Their mean age was 38.23 years old (extreme 11 and 61 years old; median 36 years old). Of these 13 cases, 5 strains of Salmonella typhi were isolated with an antibiotic susceptibility profile per strain, as follows: 3/5 with ciprofloxacin 5 μg; 1/5 with Nalidixic Acid 30 μg and 1/5 with Amoxicillin 30 μg. Conclusion. The result of the present study shows that S. typhi is actually involved in ileal peritonitis in Kinshasa. But, the loss of samples did not allow knowing the real extent. More extensive studies are needed to better understand this pathology. However, operators should routinely look for this pathogen in the peritoneal fluid on peritonitis over ileal perforation.
