Lake LaGrange diorama depicting an underwater habitat in southwest Michigan. The diorama is populated by plant and fish models and a small turtle. A list of specimens is mounted on the right side to assist with species identification, while the diagram on the left explains how plants and animals are all interrelated in a great web of life. The Lake LaGrange diorama was unusual at the time in its use of semi-transparent glass to give the illusion of a murky, underwater environment. Up to this point the Field Museum's marine dioramas tended to use clear glass and were designed to give visitors an unobstructed view into the world of the diorama. |
