Cet article examine comment l’idée de l’Empire angevin a contribué à déterminer les intérêts de Raoul à l’égard non seulement des événements contemporains, mais aussi du passé, surtout pour les ancêtres tant angevins que normands et anglais d’Henri II. Il propose que l’Empire angevin, bien que mal défini, commençait déjà à influencer la façon dont les gens comprenaient l’histoire ainsi que le monde qui les entourait. ; The Angevin Empire, as most modern historians call it, was only a loosely unified polity, and the fact that it had no medieval name suggests that it played a far less significant role in the mental landscape of the time than such well-established mental constructs as England and France. Nonetheless, the influence of this unnamed collection of territories on the writings of the historian Ralph of Diceto, a subject never previously examined, suggests that this state-of-affairs was beginning to change in the decades leading up to its collapse in 1204 and the pivotal conquest of Normandy. This article discusses how the Angevin Empire shaped Ralph’s interests not only on contemporary events but also in the past, particularly with his interest in the Angevin as well as Norman and English ancestors of Henry II, and argues that the Angevin empire, however inchoate its nature, was already beginning to influence how people viewed history and the world around them. |
