الوصف: | The thesis focuses on the effects of the flexible forms of employment on the social prestige of employees. The sociological problem of the thesis has to do with, whether to what extent and to what direction the flexibility affects employees’ social prestige. And at the same time how the employees themselves experience and perceive the social prestige stemming from work.The international and Greek bibliography shows that the employees’ social prestige formed through their work, is defined or transformed by objective (working conditions) and subjective (social relations, experiences) factors. However, by the 1970s and onwards, the changes in the regulation of work in the primary, secondary and tertiary sector, and mostly the changes in the Public Utility Organizations, form a working environment characterized by instability, decollectivization and problems concerning the employees’ economic and social prestige.To examine the above, the case of the employees in the Greek Public Power Corporation was chosen. The reasons are: a) the PPC’s importance in the country’s energy production and distribution, and its role in regulating the relations between state and work, b) the PPC’s important role between public and private sector of work, c) practices and policies, implemented initially on public organizations and then on other corporations, and d) PPC connects Greece with international organizations which regulate economy and commerce (EU, IMF, IEA).Thesis’ theoretical background depends on a synthesis of Marxist and Weberian approach. In the field research both quantitative (questionnaires) and qualitative (semi structured interviews and observation) methods are used on PPC’s employees in administration departments, factories and mines, from May to October 2011.The thesis concludes that the non-standard forms of employment, deskilling, personalization, uncertainty and insecurity – concerning mostly the temporary staff – now start to affect all employees.
