الوصف: | For about 600 years, Gypsies, the Rom people, known under different denominations in Europe, settled in this continent, forming part of the society of several countries. Throughout their nomadic lives, they scarcely left any historical testimonies. Of those six hundred years of history the author will only deal with the first hundred, the last century of the Middle Ages, in which the Gypsies came under the public perception in Europe, that is to say, in travellers’ tales, in the municipal accounts books, in chronicles, in the documentation of levies, registers of travellers and similar documentation. Throughout this study, a number of questions will arise: What kind of life did the Gypsies lead and what did they live from? What were their traditions and what particular thoughts did they have? What was their religion and why were they so negatively viewed? The chapter “Gypsies and Pilgrims”, above all in the Ways to Santiago de Compostela, focuses on the big bluff swindle whereby the pilgrim “Gypsies” obtained high quality safe conduct passes, alms, donations and privileges, including their own jurisdiction. They introduced themselves as Dukes and Counts of Little Egypt doing penance for seven years because their forefathers had refused to provide protection and lodgings to the Holy Family on its flight into Egypt. A special section is assigned to the Gypsy pilgrims on the routes in the Iberian Peninsula, in particular, following the tracks of Count Thomas and his entourage, which wandered through Western Europe including Spain for almost forty years. A list of the Gypsies mentioned and documented in the XV century is also provided. Owing to the growing lack of understanding between the Gypsies and the rest of population and the strict policy on assimilation of the Catholic Monarchs, in 1499 the first anti-gypsy Royal Pragmatic was issued in Medina del Campo, at first valid only for the Kingdom of Castile; but, almost immediately, more than 280 Pragmatics were issued for all of Spain.
