Prior research indicates that the Sombrero Operating System offers a model for computing that reduces complexity in the implementation of both system and application software. Much of this research, though not all, relied on simulation. This thesis reports on an extensive effort to develop and implement for Sombrero common features found in more conventional operating systems. The goal was to render a judgment, if only in a preliminary manner, as to whether or not the benefits of Sombrero demonstrated in theory were realizable in practice. A good software development environment facilitates good software development. The effort to install a Sombrero development system has been reduced and thereby the coding and testing of Sombrero system modules was made easier and previously undocumented aspects of Sombrero have been documented. This is an area where Sombrero will continue to lag because of the small development community. This effort also exploits Sombrero’s object-oriented development model to provide an implementation of a lower-level architecture for the Alpha platform. Software |
