| الوصف: | There are two classes in the society – the first class has access to information and computing technology and the second class is ignorant about them. The phrase 'digital divide' refers to the disparity between these two classes of people. This article presents some facts about the digital divide relevant to the Indian scenario, which focuses on the factors that increase the digital divide, types of digital divide, its causes as well as programs for digital inclusion. The article also discusses the role of libraries and information centers in bridging the digital divide. Libraries are considered the 'heart of an institution', allowing all categories of users, regardless of caste, creed or age group, access to information resources. ICT and the Internet have simplified and streamlined access to global information, making it more convenient, reliable and accessible anywhere, at any time and in any format. Libraries have the potential to bridge the digital divide in social, economic and educational development due to their characteristics of providing access to global knowledge to all sections and user categories. |
