الوصف: Rumination is an increasingly studied transdiagnostic factor of mental disorders. Yet, few studies have investigated rumination and its various features in everyday life. Moreover, although executive control (EC) is considered a potential mechanism of rumination, its associations with rumination within short timeframes have not been studied yet. Therefore, this study investigated the temporal dynamics of five features of rumination and their associations with self-reported EC. To this end, we conducted an intensive longitudinal study using an experiential sampling methodology: forty participants responded four times a day to six questions for two weeks. The data were analyzed using multilevel temporal network analysis (mlVAR), generating three different networks representing temporal (from one time point to the next), contemporaneous (within the same time point), and between-subject associations. The results indicate that among the facets of rumination, only the negativity of thoughts predicted the other aspects of rumination and worsened EC from one point to the next. Moreover, only the negative valence thought and brooding (i.e., thinking about the causes and consequences of emotional experiences) features showed autocorrelation: they predicted themselves at the next time point. Negative valence thought is also the only facet associated with worse EC within the same time point. Finally, unlike the temporal network, the between-subject network indicates that a greater tendency to think about the causes and consequences of emotional experiences is associated with worse EC but not negativity. In conclusion, these results illustrate the importance of studying rumination as a multifaceted construct dynamically, at contemporaneous and temporal levels , given the differences between networks. Additionally, the results highlight the critical role of negative valence thoughts in the self-perpetuating nature of rumination.
