الوصف: There is an apparent lack of conformity in the practice of ear syringing. Community nurses are divided in their use of ear syringing equipment, i.e. metal syringes or electric irrigators. This article details the results of a survey undertaken to ascertain how many and how frequently community nurses perform this procedure. The study aimed to establish the diversity of the approaches used and explored some of the reasons that determine the use of equipment. One of the main aims of the study was to establish how competent nurses perceive themselves to be in carrying out ear syringing. A further aim was to establish the unmet training needs of nurses. Ear syringing is an under-researched and pertinent area for community nurses. This study showed that 90% of the 80 nurses in this sample currently carry out ear syringing. Sixty per cent of these nurses indicated that they would like further training in this area. It would appear from this study that nurses do not base their practice on the literature available and the need for further scientific research on the safety and comfort of current practice is highlighted. The value of this procedure in current nursing practice is not, however, examined in this article.
