مستخلص: Recently, in several countries a moral panic has broken out after reports hit the news that girls were outperforming boys in education. 'The boys' problem' was born. Measures were announced by the respective governments to combat this new form of educational inequality. The present review of the international literature focuses on the following questions: Can one indeed speak of a boys' problem, and if so, how long has it been in existence? How big are the effects of pupils' sex relative to those of their social background and ethnicity? Does the resulting picture apply to all countries in the western world? What kinds of explanations are offered for the sex differences? Results show that, viewed internationally, a certain degree of vertical educational inequality based on sex that works against boys currently exists. This inequality is however much smaller than that of social background and ethnicity. At the same time, results show a large horizontal educational inequality based on sex regarding the distribution of boys and girls across courses and sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
