مستخلص: The article discusses the role of the ecological compatibility, porosity and right distance concepts in rethinking the contemporary European city. The trend of urban shrinkage, particularly decentralization and deterritorialization, in the region has emerged over the last forty years. The significance of architecture and environmental design to the process of urban renovation in Europe is addressed. As a way to address more general issues related to postindustrial European urbanism, a new vision and specific design proposals for the city of Antwerp, Belgium are being developed by Paola Viganó and the author, which consist of porous, fragmented, discontinuous and dispersed villages.
