The article describes the case of a patent's impact on the aquatic macrophyte Euryale ferox on biodiversity at micro level at Malda district in West Bengal, India in 2006. It claims that the patent triggered publicity resulting in mass culture and commercialization of the water lily due to its beneficial uses. It describes the Euryale ferox or makhna, its economic importance and its cultivation in 80% of the area's aquatic beds leading to the death of fishes and loss of livelihood to fishermen. |
