Based on the qualities of the first born and on the research literature, we rank the following birth order combinations in terms of successful marriages: (1) first born (FB) husband (h), Later Born (LB) wife (w); (2) LB (h), FB (w); (3) Middle Born (MB) (h) or MB (vv) with any other; (4) Only Child (OC) of either sex with FB; (5) FB (h), FB (w); (6) LB (h), LB (w); (7) OC (h), OC (w). 236 women of Tel-Aviv, Israel completed a questionnaire of adjustment to marital life. While the results closely approximated the rank order, the first three combinations were characterized as high, the fourth as medium, and the last three as low, marital adjustment.
