مستخلص: The article presents information on the significance of design element in curriculum planning. An effective design element helps in simplifying an increasingly complex curriculum. The new content studies and other resources that are now available for curriculum making, make it complex. Comprehensiveness often affects curriculum. The design element is considered to be very important in many applied fields. The role of design as an element in curriculum planning has been clarified by curriculum theorist Virgil Herrick. He recognized many functions to be served by the design element. The design element selects and organizes learning experiences. It is also useful in clarifying the roles of educators and learners in the total curriculum development process. According to Herrick, the curriculum design, or pattern, can be seen on three different levels. The various approaches--patterns such as core, broad fields, or problem-centered programs--are embraced by the Herrick's concept.
