A new report from Tehran University of Medical Sciences discusses the risk factors associated with facial nerve dysfunction after vestibular schwannoma resection. The study found that large tumor size, tumor extension, FN adhesion, the presence of cystic lesions, and advanced tumor stage were significant predictors of adverse facial nerve outcomes. The use of intraoperative monitoring of the facial nerve was linked with improved outcomes. The researchers recommend radiological follow-up for cases where risk factors necessitate partial resection to monitor for tumor recurrence and determine the need for further surgical intervention.
