A recent study conducted by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden examined the speech production of 17 internationally adopted children with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) at three different time points. The study found that while there was a positive development in speech production, most children still scored low for consonant proficiency at the age of 7-8 compared to normative values. Many children also had persisting cleft-related and developmental consonant errors. The study highlights the need for detailed follow-up of speech production in clinical settings and further research on the everyday impact of speech difficulties in these children.
