A report from Michigan State University discusses the use of erythropoietin (EPO) as a potential treatment for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating the effectiveness of EPO in treating HIE. The analysis included seven studies with 903 infants and found that EPO did not reduce the risk of death, neurodisability, or cerebral palsy. The researchers suggest that future large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to further evaluate the safety and efficacy of EPO for the treatment of neonatal encephalopathy.
