مستخلص: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the causative agent for the immune deficient condition AIDS. The virus tends to infect cells and develop intracellular reservoirs which are inaccessible for the current HAART therapy. HAART therapy also contributes to serious side effects, relapse, and resistance development in the virus. Dendrimers are the novel carrier component that can deliver the drug to the target site. Dendrimers are multi-branched, symmetrical molecules in the nano-size range with a well-defined structure with a specific core followed by inner and outer shells. Dendrimers inhibit polyvalency, self-assembling, chemical stability, solubility, and low toxicity. Different varieties of dendrimers are available with high drug loading capacity. When functionalized, dendrimers can be targeted to the intracellular reservoir site of HIV. It can act as cargo for different anti-retroviral agents and gene therapy. Dendrimers themselves act as anti-HIV agents, they can bind with the CD4 receptor of the host cell or gp120 receptor of HIV and prevent the binding of the host cell surface with the HIV molecule. The review explores dendrimers as the novel carrier for the delivery of the drug/gene to the target sites. It also covers the synthesis, properties, and HIV potential of the dendrimers.
