مستخلص: This article discusses the determination of brain death in patients on veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (va-ECMO) using ancillary tests such as electrophysiological methods, transcranial duplex sonography, and brain perfusion scintigraphy. The German Medical Association (GMA) guidelines restrict the use of radiological and perfusion techniques for brain death determination in va-ECMO patients due to a lack of evidence. The article presents a case study where brain death was determined according to the current guidelines and cerebral perfusion was investigated using 99mTc-HMPAO scintigraphy and transcranial duplex sonography. The authors recommend further research to evaluate the use of these methods in diagnosing circulatory arrest in brain dead patients on va-ECMO support. [Extracted from the article]
