The early medieval sculptural objects preserved in Ravenna has been less fortunate than that of the fifth and sixth centuries, which has been the subject of study for at least a century. Perhaps this is a consequence of the small quantity of artifacts. In general, the Ravenna fragments attributable to the seventh to ninth centuries belong to the production that spread during the early Middle Ages, characterized by a few recurring decorative motifs. Only one object, preserved at the National Museum in Ravenna, falls outside this group both in terms of the themes depicted and the rendering. It is a small sarcophagus with a decorated front, that to date has not attracted the interest of scholars up to now. An analysis of the piece is proposed here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

Il materiale scultoreo altomedievale conservato in Ravenna ha avuto meno fortuna rispetto a quello dei secoli V-VI, che da almeno un secolo è oggetto di studio. Forse questa è la conseguenza della esigua quantità di manufatti. In genere i frammenti ravennati attribuibili ai secoli che vanno dal VII al IX, appartengono alla produzione diffusasi durante l'alto Medioevo, caratterizzata da pochi e ricorrenti motivi decorativi. Un solo oggetto, conservato presso il Museo Nazionale di Ravenna, esula da questo gruppo sia per i temi che vi sono raffigurati, sia per la resa. Si tratta di un "sarcofaghetto" con la fronte decorata, che ad oggi, non ha attirato l'interesse degli studiosi. In questa sede si propone un'analisi del pezzo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
