This article presents initial results from a research study on the medieval gates of the city of Lucca, Porta San Gervasio and the "Porta dei Borghi", carried out as part of the author's Master's degree thesis. After briefly describing the structure and characteristics of the medieval city walls, whose construction phase is said to date to 1198, the paper analyzes the construction technique, the type of materials and tools used in stone-working and, finally, the stratigraphy of the elevations of the two monuments, offering a detailed reconstruction. Of significant interest for the subject dealt with is the in-depth study of the lion statues now at the National Museum of Villa Guinigi. In particular, the demonstration of their originality, and their attribution to the central period of activity of the Lombard artist Guido da Arogno, allow us to formulate a hypothesis regarding the chronology of the city gates themselves. They seem to have been completed by the end of the first decade of the 13th century. The research study as a whole represents the first critical analysis of both these medieval monuments and, as such, aims to become a reliable basis for future investigations on the subject. In questo contributo si presentano i primi risultati della ricerca sulle porte urbiche di età medievale di Lucca, Porta San Gervasio e Porta "dei Borghi", svolta nell'ambito della tesi di laurea dell'autore. Dopo aver descritto brevemente la struttura e le caratteristiche della cerchia medievale, la cui fase di cominciamento dei lavori di costruzione viene attribuita al 1198, nel presente contributo si analizza la tecnica edilizia, la tipologia dei materiali e degli strumenti impiegati nella lavorazione della pietra e, infine, la stratigrafia degli elevati dei due monumenti. Il tutto attraverso un'attenta ricostruzione grafica. Di interesse rilevante per la tematica trattata è l'approfondimento riguardante le statue dei leoni conservate presso il Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi. In particolare, la dimostrazione della loro originalità e la loro attribuzione al periodo centrale di operato dell'artista lombardo Guido da Arogno, ha permesso di formulare un'ipotesi sulla cronologia delle porte urbiche. Esse sarebbero state terminate entro la fine del primo decennio del XIII secolo. L'intero lavoro rappresenta il primo studio critico su entrambi i monumenti medievali e, come tale, si propone di diventare una valida base per approfondimenti futuri sul tema.
