McGriff's blast highlighted the Atlanta Braves' 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians before 51,876 in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Even though Atlanta had come up a little short in prior years (losing the World Series in 1991 and 1992 before McGriff arrived in a mid-1993 trade with the San Diego Padres), the Braves of the '90s won a whole lot of games and had a lot of confidence. Fred McGriff grew up just blocks from Tampa's Al Lopez Field, which then was the spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds. In a contest he will never forget, McGriff - who will be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame on July 23 - connected against former World Series MVP Orel Hershiser in Game 1 of the 1995 Fall Classic.
