مستخلص: For patients undergoing colorectal surgery (CRS) with the formation of a new stoma, stoma education is a fundamental aspect of their pre- and postoperative care. The availability, delivery and quality of stoma education can either negatively or positively affect a patient's stoma-related outcomes. The following literature review was developed with the aim to uncover the impact enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols may have on stoma education and stoma-related patient outcomes for CRS patients with a new stoma. A MEDLINE database search was conducted in November 2021, with five studies chosen to be appraised using a critical appraisal skills program (CASP) checklist to determine their inclusion within the literature review. The findings indicate stoma education is vital in improving patient outcomes following a stoma formation; however, the delivery of patient education and assessment of independent stoma management is not standardised, thus requiring further research.
