This article presents a clinical update on perioperative fluid management. Perioperative fluid administration is believed to enable the awake and fasted adult patient to maintain blood pressure while preventing anaesthesia-induced hypotension. Fluid preloading and liberal intraoperative fluid substitution are not evidence-based procedures. There are two primary, competing efforts to update traditional perioperative infusion. Research is suggesting that patients might fare better with a restricted fluid load but the definition of restrictive is open to interpretation and more trials are needed to set standards. |
