The article looks at developments in the chemistry of H-phosphinic acids and their derivatives. H-phosphinic acids and esters are valuable synthetic intermediates in preparing other more common phosphorus functionalities. H-phosphinic acids might act as pro-drugs of biologically-active phosphonates through in vivo oxidation or synthetically as precursors through chemical oxidation. The methodologies developed to allow access to almost any type of H-phosphinate include metal-catalyzed hydrophosphinylation, palladium-catalyzed and reductive allylation, esterification, free radical reactions, nucleophilic reactions, and palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling. |
