مستخلص: This article explores the presence of harmful content on social media platforms and why users are drawn to it. The authors argue that the advertising-based business model of these platforms can create incentives for displaying harmful content. They propose a model that suggests advertising-driven platforms may prioritize user engagement over the potential harm caused by the content. However, subscription-based platforms are less likely to display harmful content as it decreases users' willingness to pay. The article also presents findings from a field experiment that showed a decrease in engagement and ad impressions when toxic content was removed. It cautions against assuming that increased engagement always leads to improved welfare and highlights the complex policy implications of reducing harmful content on social media platforms.
