The author discusses natural science collections in the U.S., their irreplaceable nature, and the urgent need to correct decades of neglect that such collections reportedly have endured. The author notes the adverse effects of substandard storage facilities, inadequate budgets for maintenance of such collections, and a significant shortage of curators and other needed personnel. He presents several examples of the poor state of natural science collections throughout the U.S., indicating that most collections are not electronically cataloged. |
