مستخلص: This article reports on a rare case of abnormal hyperpigmentation in a freshwater sardine species, Triportheus auritus, from the Amazon basin in Brazil. Hyperpigmentation, characterized by excessive pigmentation in the skin or other tissues, has been observed in various fish species. However, this is the first documented case of hypermelanosis in Amazonian freshwater fishes. The specimen was collected from the Tefé River and showed hyperpigmentation on the scales and skin of the head. The rarity of this abnormality suggests that it may be an individual abnormality rather than a common occurrence in the population. The article provides detailed morphometric data and histological analysis of the specimen. The authors speculate that the survival of the hypermelanic individual may be facilitated by the aquatic lighting conditions of the black water in the Tefé River. [Extracted from the article]
