This article highlights the limitations of Philip W.Porter's point on minimum travel. Porter had proposed that for any distribution, the point of minimum aggregate travel would lie on a line bisecting the acute angle formed by the two regression lines. The actual distance of Porter's point form the mean point is some fraction of the distance of the orthogonal median line from the mean point. However, his point is not the median or point of minimum aggregate travel, because it depends on the two linear regressions, which in turn depend on the choice of coordinate axes. |
