الوصف: | Ph.D. ; Against the backdrop of the prevalently increasing peripheral position of teaching among all academic works, the present study examined Chinese mainland university faculty members’ teaching reality in the field of engineering subjects and its influencing factors. Drawing upon the social realist theory, the study explored the impact of relevant structural, cultural and reflexive factors as well as their interplay on Chinese engineering faculty members’ teaching agency, teasing out relevant enabling and hindering factors that shape the ultimate behavior of faculty members in terms of teaching. Specifically, the study answered three research questions including ‘How do Chinese engineering faculty members exercise their agency in teaching’, ‘What factors influence or shape Chinese engineering faculty members’ exercise of teaching agency’, and ‘Do certain influencing factors impact Chinese engineering faculty members’ teaching agency through other factors’. ; The study employed an explanatory mixed-method design, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches to examining the research questions. The first phase used the qualitative method to carry out initial interviews and document analysis for the exploration of preliminary factors influencing Chinese engineering faculty’s perceptions and implementation of teaching and other issues related teaching excellence at university level. It supported the collection and analysis of non-numeric data for meaning making. Purposeful sampling was used to select the case institution and ‘University A’, a middle-ranking Chinese university from the central part of China whose engineering programs have reputations in the society was selected as the case institution to be explored. A total of 9 engineering faculty members with diverse academic titles, years of teaching experience, and subject matter fields were interviewed.
