الوصف: M.Phil. ; The inclination towards discursive representations has eclipsed the role of economic resources and relations in existing scholarship of sexuality. Whilst studies of social class rarely cross paths with sexuality. In light of this double absence, this article fills the lacuna by exploring the influences of economic inequality on gay men’s social life. Drawing on interviews with 38 working-class and middle-class gay men in Hong Kong, I argue social class has prominent impact on gay men’s practices of coming out, attachment to gay networks, ideals and models of intimate relationships, and engagement styles in gay movements. First, middle-class gay men are found to be less likely to come out in their family. Economic assets, in the process, may deter the urgency of coming out by providing a reservoir of resources for evading potential family crisis. Second, class-differentiated pathways and career trajectory channel gay men into different networks with various types of supports. I discuss three types of attachment styles, namely, pragmatic attachment, social engagement, and community-based attachment. Third, class origin and class ideologies are rooted in gay men’s ideals on intimate partners and relationship goals. Class resources enable or constrain access to life choices that allow gay men to overcome structural constraints and sexual injustice in Hong Kong. Fourth, for working-class gay men, class vulnerability is relevant to experiences of sexual discrimination, which later circulates into the realm of politics. Endorsement on formal protest tactics among middle-class interviewees is divided. A preference on ambiguous participation – signified by inclusivity, un-intentionality and non-confrontation, is observed. The comparative findings enrich studies of stratification by incorporating the material and cultural dimension of class into the theorisation of sexuality.
