مستخلص: Despite advances in anesthesia techniques, patients continue to experience postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Postoperative nausea and vomiting can impact wound healing, fluid and electrolyte balance, and emotional state. Furthermore, patients that have experienced PONV will have a heightened emotional response in the event of future procedures. Postoperative nausea and vomiting also may increase health care costs by unanticipated overnight admission after day surgery for continued management. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have released guidelines on the prevention of PONV; however, the guidelines and documentation are not in practice at this ambulatory surgical center (ASC). These guidelines involve identifying patients at increased risk for PONV and a tiered approach to antiemetic therapy. This project will result in the implementation and evaluation of a standardized PONV protocol in an ASC in Massachusetts.
