الوصف: The purpose of this research is to examine the fears of school age children in Greece. In particular, the quality of children’s fears is investigated, as they are reported by the elementary school children themselves from all over Greece. Also, the differentiations of these fears are examined in relation to the children’s gender and age, as well as whether these fears influence the children’s social acceptance and scope in the classroom. Finally, we examine whether the fears have an impact on third- and fourth-grade students’ reading ability. Three thousand two hundred and twenty (3220) students between the ages of 7 and 12 years recorded their fears in Fear Survey Schedule for Children, Fssc-Gr. One hundred and eleven of them participated in the construction of the social-dynamics diagram in their classes and sixty of them completed the Tafa Reading Ability Test. A model of six fear factors resulted from the children’s records: a) fear of danger and death, b) fear for the unknown, c) fear of failure and criticism, d) fear of getting wounded and small animals, e) medical fears, and f) fear of the dark and loneliness. This model includes the five factors that resulted from the application of Fssc-R in similar studies, as well as the factor of the “fear of the dark and loneliness”, which practically results from the split of the “fear for the unknown”, as it appears in previous studies. Like in previous studies in other countries, girls appear to demonstrate greater fears than boys do. The changes of fears in relation to age are recorded and examined in relation to other factors, i.e. culture. As regards the students’ social status in the class, it does not seem to be directly influenced by the existence of fears. Finally, the reading ability of third- and fourth-graders does not seem to be directly influenced by their fear behaviour. The findings are discussed in relation to the axes of the study, that is, in relation to the gender role, the role of age, the cultural factors, the students’ social status in the ...
