    الوصف: Recent results in the theory and application of Newton-Puiseux expansions, i.e. fractional power series solutions of equations, suggest further developments within a more abstract algebraic-geometric framework, involving in particular the theory of toric varieties and ideals. Here, we present a number of such developments, especially in relation to the equations of van der Pol, Riccati, and Schr\"{o}dinger. Some pure mathematical concepts we are led to are Graver, Gr\"{o}bner, lattice and circuit bases, combinatorial geometry and differential algebra, and algebraic-differential equations. Two techniques are coordinated: classical dimensional analysis (DA) in applied mathematics and science, and a polynomial and differential-polynomial formulation of asymptotic expansions, referred to here as Newton-Puiseux (NP) expansions. The latter leads to power series with rational exponents, which depend on the choice of the dominant part of the equations, often referred to as the method of "dominant balance". The paper shows, using a new approach to DA based on toric ideals, how dimensionally homogeneous equations may best be non-dimensionalised, and then, with examples involving differential equations, uses recent work on NP expansions to show how non-dimensional parameters affect the results. Our approach finds a natural home within computational algebraic geometry, i.e. at the interface of abstract and algorithmic mathematics.

    الوصف: AimThe aim of this work was to evaluate colorectal cancer (CRC) outcomes after ‘low’ (sub-threshold) faecal immunochemical test (FIT) results in symptomatic patients tested in primary care. MethodThis work comprised a retrospective audit of 35 289 patients with FIT results who had consulted their general practitioner with lower gastrointestinal symptoms and had subsequent CRC diagnoses. The Rapid Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis pathway was introduced in November 2017 to allow incorporation of FIT into clinical practice. The local ‘4F’ protocol combined FIT results with blood tests and digital rectal examination (DRE): FIT, full blood count, ferritin and finger [DRE]. The outcome used was detection rates of CRC, missed CRC and time to diagnosis in local 4F protocols for patients with a subthreshold faecal haemoglobin (fHb) result compared with thresholds of 10 and 20 μg Hb/g faeces. ResultsA single threshold of 10 μg Hb/g faeces identifies a population in whom the risk of CRC is 0.2%, but this would have missed 63 (10.5%) of 599 CRCs in this population. The Nottingham 4F protocol would have missed fewer CRCs [42 of 599 (7%)] despite using a threshold of 20 μg Hb/g faeces for patients with normal blood tests. Subthreshold FIT results in patients subsequently diagnosed with a palpable rectal tumour yielded the longest delays in diagnosis. ConclusionA combination of FIT with blood results and DRE (the 4F protocol) reduced the risk of missed or delayed diagnosis. Further studies on the impact of such protocols on the diagnostic accuracy of FIT are expected. The value of adding blood tests to FIT may be restricted to specific parts of the fHb results spectrum.

    الوصف: Conservation funding is currently limited; cost-effective conservation solutions are essential. We suggest that the thousands of field stations worldwide can play key roles at the frontline of biodiversity conservation and have high intrinsic value. We assessed field stations? conservation return on investment and explored the impact of COVID-19. We surveyed leaders of field stations across tropical regions that host primate research; 157 field stations in 56 countries responded. Respondents reported improved habitat quality and reduced hunting rates at over 80% of field stations and lower operational costs per km2 than protected areas, yet half of those surveyed have less funding now than in 2019. Spatial analyses support field station presence as reducing deforestation. These ?earth observatories? provide a high return on investment; we advocate for increased support of field station programs and for governments to support their vital conservation efforts by investing accordingly.

    الوصف: Purpose Characterizing trends and correlates of adolescent psychological distress is important due to observed global increases over the last 20 years. Substance use is a commonly discussed correlate, though we lack an understanding about how co-occurrence of these concerns has been changing over time. Methods Data came from repeated, representative, cross-sectional surveys of grade 7–12 students across Ontario, Canada conducted biennially from 2013 to 2019. Poisson regression with robust standard errors was used to examine changes in the joint association between psychological distress (operationalized as Kessler-6 [K6] scores ≥ 13) and substance use over time. Weighted prevalence ratios (PR) and their 99% confidence intervals were estimated, where p < 0.01 denotes statistical significance. Results The prevalence of psychological distress doubled between 2013 and 2019, with adjusted increases of about 1.2 times each survey year. This biennial increase did not differ based on sex, perceived social standing, school level, or any substance use. Students using substances consistently reported a higher prevalence of psychological distress (between 1.2 times and 2.7 times higher). There were similarly no differential temporal trends based on substance use for very high distress (K6 ≥ 19) or K6 items explored individually. Conclusion Psychological distress steeply increased among adolescents and substance use remains important to assess and address alongside distress. However, the magnitude of temporal increases appears to be similar for adolescents reporting and not reporting substance use.

    الوصف: Context. CM-like asteroids (Ch and Cgh classes) are a major population within the broader C-complex, encompassing about 10% of the mass of the main asteroid belt. Their internal structure has been predicted to be homogeneous, based on their compositional similarity as inferred from spectroscopy (Vernazza et al., 2016, AJ 152, 154) and numerical modeling of their early thermal evolution (Bland & Travis, 2017, Sci. Adv. 3, e1602514). Aims. Here we aim to test this hypothesis by deriving the density of the CM-like asteroid (41) Daphne from detailed modeling of its shape and the orbit of its small satellite. Methods. We observed Daphne and its satellite within our imaging survey with the Very Large Telescope extreme adaptive-optics SPHERE/ZIMPOL camera (ID 199.C-0074, PI P. Vernazza) and complemented this data set with earlier Keck/NIRC2 and VLT/NACO observations. We analyzed the dynamics of the satellite with our Genoid meta-heuristic algorithm. Combining our high-angular resolution images with optical lightcurves and stellar occultations, we determine the spin period, orientation, and 3-D shape, using our ADAM shape modeling algorithm. Results. The satellite orbits Daphne on an equatorial, quasi-circular, prograde orbit, like the satellites of many other large main-belt asteroids. The shape model of Daphne reveals several large flat areas that could be large impact craters. The mass determined from this orbit combined with the volume computed from the shape model implies a density for Daphne of 1.77+/-0.26 g/cm3 (3 {\sigma}). This density is consistent with a primordial CM-like homogeneous internal structure with some level of macroporosity (~17%). Conclusions. Based on our analysis of the density of Daphne and 75 other Ch/Cgh-type asteroids gathered from the literature, we conclude that the primordial internal structure of the CM parent bodies was homogeneous.

    الوصف: Objective: Establish suitable frequency spacing and demodulation steps to use when extracting impedance changes from frequency division multiplexed (FDM) carrier signals in peripheral nerve. Approach: Experiments were performed in-vitro on cadavers immediately following euthanasia. Neural activity was evoked via stimulation of nerves in the hind paw, while carrier signals were injected, and recordings obtained, with a dual ring nerve cuff implanted on the sciatic nerve. Frequency analysis of recorded compound action potentials (CAPs) and extracted impedance changes, with the latter obtained using established demodulation methods, were used to determine suitable frequency spacing of carrier signals, and bandpass filter (BPF) bandwidth and order, for a frequency multiplexed signal. Main results: CAPs and impedance changes were dominant in the frequency band 200 to 500 Hz and 100 to 200 Hz, respectively. A Tukey window was introduced to remove ringing from Gibbs phenomena. A +/- 750 Hz BPF bandwidth was selected to encompass 99.99 % of the frequency power of the impedance change. Modelling predicted a minimum BPF order of 16 for 2 kHz spacing, and 10 for 4 kHz spacing, were required to avoid ringing from the neighbouring carrier signal, while FDM experiments verified BPF orders of 12 and 8, respectively, were required. With a notch filter centred on the neighbouring signal, a BPF order of at least 6 or 4 was required for 2 and 4 kHz, respectively. Significance: The results establish drive frequency spacing and demodulation settings for use in FDM electrical impedance tomography (EIT) experiments, as well as a framework for their selection, and, for the first time, demonstrates the viability of FDM-EIT of neural activity on peripheral nerve, which will be a central aspect of future real-time neural-EIT systems and EIT-based neural prosthetics interfaces.

    الوصف: Published September 2023 ; Background and purpose: Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is implicated in multiple sclerosis (MS) risk; evidence for other herpesviruses is inconsistent. Here, we test blood markers of infection with human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), varicella zoster virus (VZV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) as risk factors for a first clinical diagnosis of central nervous system demyelination (FCD) in the context of markers of EBV infection. Methods: In the Ausimmune case–control study, cases had an FCD, and population controls were matched on age, sex, and study region. We quantified HHV-6- and VZVDNA load in whole blood and HHV-6, VZV, and CMV antibodies in serum. Conditional logistic regression tested associations with FCD risk, adjusting for Epstein–Barr nuclear antigen (EBNA) IgG, EBV-DNA load, and other covariates. Results: In 204 FCD cases and 215 matched controls, only HHV-6-DNA load (positive vs. negative) was associated with FCD risk (adjusted odds ratio = 2.20, 95% confidence interval = 1.08–4.46, p= 0.03). Only EBNA IgG and HHV-6-DNA positivity were retained in a predictive model of FCD risk; the combination had a stronger association than either alone. CMV-specific IgG concentration modified the association between an MS riskrelated human leucocyte antigen gene and FCD risk. Six cases and one control had very high HHV-6-DNA load (>1.0 × 106 copies/mL). Conclusions: HHV-6-DNA positivity and high load (possibly due to inherited HHV-6 chromosomal integration) were associated with increased FCD risk, particularly in association with markers of EBV infection. With growing interest in prevention/ management of MS through EBV-related pathways, there should be additional consideration of the role of HHV-6 infection. ; Robyn M. Lucas, Meav-Lang J.
