The purpose of this case is to highlight the challenges faced in growing a community bank and the risks and potential rewards for investors. This case, based on the formation of Park Sterling Bank in Charlotte, NC, is intended for junior level courses in corporate finance, management, money and banking, or investments. The case can be discussed in 1 - 2 class periods and will require 3 hours of outside preparation by students. Specifically, students will assess the operating results of Park Sterling Bank, including the impact of the souring economy and the declining real estate market. They will also examine the role of management and bank directors in providing strategic direction while avoiding potential conflicts of interest that arose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
