الوصف: AbstractMany societal challenges need to be resolved through innovative solutions at system level. Previous scholars have argued that it may be wise to combine design practice and system theory to form a management method for public sector innovation. However, it appears that few scholars have developed innovation management methods based on that combination. The aim of this article is therefore to contribute with new knowledge about how design practice and system theory can be combined in order to drive public sector innovation. The article proposes the development of a previously proposed systemic design management model and presents a toolbox with twelve innovation management tools. Although there is a logic in using the tools in a certain order, this article emphasizes the need for a flexible use of the tools and to be open to moving back and forth between different tools. The results also indicate that an initial key tool is to ensure that the right people become involved in the different phases of the innovation process. It is more important to involve the right people in different phases than to follow a specific pre-designed process model. In order to successfully create and implement innovative solutions at system level, the innovation processes need to engage different human resources for different tools. Different resources that understand the needs can contribute with new perspectives and also possess the mandate to make systemic changes.

الوصف: Italy’s inland areas face complex challenges such as depopulation, isolation and economic weakness. Through a research project conducted in Taranta Peligna (Chieti, IT), the paper aims to enhance the wool supply chain by adopting a systemic, co-design and collaborative approach among local governments, institutions and communities. To develop innovative and sustainable solutions, implementing systemic design methodologies and through the analysis of international case studies, concrete actions are proposed, such as creating an energy community and the activation of sustainable washing centres of a Network Observatory. Through a series of strategic interventions, the project aims to re-establish the importance of the wool industry by integrating modern technologies into traditional processes to achieve a revitalised, low-impact local economy. الوصف: The co-design of urban places and the role of professional urban designers entails facilitating multidimensional processes to capture people’s dreams of attractive and inclusive future living environments. Nevertheless, many urban designers tend to focus on the material factors rather than the social and cultural ones. Based on findings from a case study and conceptual analysis, a systemic reflexive tool is offered to help scholars and practitioners to comprise the complexities of urban design. The Dreamcatcher tool highlights four perspectives of situated complexity and the synergies between them: place and setting; people and participation; vision and scope; and tools and methods.

الوصف: Current approaches to innovation tend to be based on rewarding decision making based on speculative investment strategies that do not take into account the negative externalities of the innovation. This has led to overconsumption and resource usage that undermines the planet’s ability to support life in the long term, and the ability for societies to flourish. Global income inequality, the gap in women’s empowerment, increase of global pollution, reliance on fossil fuel-based energy, and food systems that use too much water have resulted in the degradation of our planet past life-sustaining and safe-operating zones of the planet. Much work is underway to improve long term sustainability and ethical decision making in small and medium sized business like the circular economy movement, and the rise of regenerative economics. But how can we embed these longer-term movements into sustainability and ethical decision making today? In this paper I propose a set of principles for Regenerative Innovation to use as guideposts when approaching innovation projects to improve sustainability, and ethical decision-making that can support innovation that considers holistic impacts of the innovation and supports sustainability efforts and long-term human flourishing.

الوصف: By 2050, more than two-thirds of world population will live in urban areas, according to projected data from Our World in Data. Many problems are highlighted by the combination of population ageing and the increase in high-density cities. This paper presents a cross-comparative analysis of community care for older adults in Shanghai and Turin in the context of a systemic design perspective and the policy framework of active ageing to track challenges and good practices in community care more comprehensively. After a thorough analysis both cities have something to learn, and reflect on.

الوصف: Entrepreneurial ecosystems have gained attention for fostering innovation and sustainable transition. However, their complexity poses challenges, especially when different companies co-design for future making toward sustainable transition strategies implementation. Systemic Design (SD) offers potential solutions, employing system mapping tools like Gigamaps, that use visual synthesis to support effectively the participatory processes. This article aims to present a formalized protocol for the use of Gigamaps as a co-design tool to trigger dialogues among industrial stakeholders, facilitating entrepreneurial ecosystem transition. Through a case study from the master’s degree SD course at Politecnico di Torino, the article will present a Gigamaps-driven co-design experience in an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Finally, the study limitation and the need for systems-thinking and complex science-based methods to support the implementation of those envisioned scenarios are stated.

الوصف: Designing a value cocreation system in the manufacturing industry has seen significant interest in the past two decades. The importance of a value cocreation system has increased along with the social expectations related to increasing resource efficiency and the emergence of enablers such as digitalization. In this article, I take this opportunity to disseminate some findings to industry and managers. Specifically, a review of product/service systems (PSSs) where a manufacturer—taking responsibility for and control of larger ranges in a value network—integrates their products and services to cocreate and capture higher value. PSS design implications and how to implement PSS design are discussed. Insights into designing a PSS in manufacturing practice are highlighted largely based on collaborative experience with large global manufacturers. Strategic management of design activities to avoid design fixation and service design trap is key to the successful design of PSSs.

الوصف: I rapporten presenteras resultaten från projektet Säker och användarcentrerad vård och omsorg i hemmiljö med deltagare från KTH, Region Stockholm, Stockholms stad, Capio Primärvård AB och Cuviva AB. Syftet med projektet har varit att bidra till ökad samordning i vård- och omsorgssystemet kring sköra äldre som erhåller vård och omsorg i sin hemmiljö. Studien visar på ett antal hinder som gör det utmanande att implementera nya arbetsmetoder och lösningar. Bland annat identifierades målkonflikter mellan såväl organisationer som mellan professioner och deras respektive drivkrafter, ansvar och befogenhet. Studien visar även på ett behov av översyn kring styrmetoder såsom ersättningsmodeller, uppföljning, granskning och hur lagar tolkas. Baserat på insikterna från projektet identifierades ett antal områden för utveckling som är tänkta att ske i framtida samverkan mellan de olika deltagande organisationerna.
