الوصف: Societal Impact Statement Climate change is predicted to increase drought and soil salinity in Mediterranean‐type ecosystems (MTEs), posing a significant threat to global food security. Genetic modification of crops to counteract this threat is expensive and has not met with universal support, and alternatives are hence needed to enhance crop production in MTEs. Here, fungal endophytes from the Atacama Desert, High Andes and Antarctica inoculated onto three crops were found to alleviate the negative effects of drought and salinity on plant performance. The study concludes that extremophile endophytes might be used to enhance crop performance as the climate of MTEs changes over future decades. Summary Climate change will curtail the ability to provide sufficient food for our rapidly expanding population. Improvements to crop production in changing environments, particularly Mediterranean‐type ecosystems (MTEs), which are increasingly subjected to drought and salinisation, are hence urgently needed. Here, we explored the possibility that fungal endophytes from extreme environments can be used to enhance crop yield, survival and tolerance to environmental stresses. Plants of lettuce, tomato and bell pepper were inoculated with up to six species of endophytic fungi isolated from the Atacama Desert, the High Andes and Antarctica. They were then exposed in the field for up to 120 days in each of three summers to current climatic conditions or to a future climate scenario simulating increased drought and soil salinisation. Compared with uninoculated plants, the yield and survival of inoculated crops were increased by up to two‐fold under the future climate scenario. These effects were in part attributable to the improved water balance of inoculated crops exposed to drought and salinisation. The inocula also increased the concentrations of total phenols and proline in leaves and decreased lipid peroxidation when plants were subjected to increased aridity and salinity. A mixed inoculum of six endophytes from the extreme environments conferred the most beneficial effects on crop performance, with a commercially available inoculum having fewer positive effects on crops. We conclude that the inoculation of crops with endophytes from extreme environments may be a viable solution to sustaining crop production in MTEs exposed to rapid climate change.

الوصف: Abstract High-throughput sequencing (HTS) has instigated a paradigm shift in plant pathology, showcasing its transformative role in the management of plant diseases. As a powerful tool, HTS aids in identifying pathogens and enhances disease management strategies by detecting novel and emerging pathogens, tracking disease outbreaks, and contributing to developing disease-resistant cultivars. Despite these benefits, the implementation of HTS faces obstacles due to the complexity of data interpretation and economic factors that affect its widespread adoption. This comprehensive review summarizes the strengths, limitations, and opportunities associated with using HTS in managing plant diseases. The article also delves into the prospects of HTS, incorporating technological advancements, synergy with complementary methodologies, capacity-building initiatives, and the development of best practices and guidelines. By acknowledging and addressing these obstacles while harnessing the full capabilities of HTS, we advocate for a refined approach to managing plant diseases. This approach is critical for ensuring global food security, especially in the context of a growing global population and climate change.

الوصف: Using beneficial microorganisms, such as purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB), has shown enormous potential for improving plant growth and agricultural production. However, the full extent of their benefits and interactions with agricultural practices is yet to be fully understood. The present study aimed to investigate the use of PNSB in crop rotation practice, focusing on its impact on rice growth and yield. The experiment was conducted over two rice cropping seasons, with djulis grown between the rice as a rotation crop. The study shows that PNSB treatment increased the concentration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) in plants, indicating enhanced photosynthesis. Moreover, when combined with crop rotation, PNSB remarkably improved soil fertility. These combined benefits resulted in substantial increases in tiller numbers (163%), leaf chlorophyll content (13%), and lodging resistance (66%), compared to the untreated plants. The combined treatment also resulted in higher productive tillers per hill (112%), average grain per hill (65%), and grain fertility (26%). This led to increased grain yield (65%), shoot dry weight (15%), and harvest index (37%). The findings clearly suggest that the incorporation of PNSB in crop rotation strategies can significantly augment the growth and yield of rice crops. These insights, pivotal for sustainable rice cultivation, hold the potential to simultaneously tackle the pressing issues of global food security and climate change.

الوصف: In the pre-war period, Ukraine’s contribution to world food security was one of the largest, based on the export of its own agricultural products. Russia’s military aggression has brought about a collapse in the production system and logistics chains of food supply in the world. The UN, the EU and a number of specialized international organizations are looking for optimal solutions to avoid a food crisis in Ukraine. The key problem is the fall in the volume of the harvest, which was planned for export, and the prerequisites for this were military actions on agricultural lands, soil pollution from ammunition and the development of illicit trade in conditions of scarcity. The purpose of the article was to prove the role of agricultural exports from Ukraine in global food security and, based on this imperative, to propose a theoretical approach in the collective coordination of the efforts of public institutions to counter logistical losses, illicit trade and soil pollution occurring in Ukraine during the war. The methods used are literature analysis, statistical data and visualizations, analytical modeling. The solution to the outlined problems of food security is proposed on the basis of the development of institutions of collective action from the standpoint of the theory of the «tragedy of the commons».

الوصف: Pests represent an important impediment to efficient agricultural production and pose a threat to global food security. On the basis of our prior research focused on identifying insecticidal leads targeting insect ryanodine receptors (RyRs), we aimed to identify evodiamine scaffold-based novel insecticides. Thus, a variety of evodiamine-based derivatives were designed, synthesized, and assessed for their insecticidal activity against the larvae of Mythimna separata (M. separata) and Plutella xylostella (P. xylostella). The preliminary bioassay results revealed that more than half of the target compounds exhibited superior activity compared to evodiamine, matrine, and rotenone against M. separata. Among these, compound 21m displayed the most potent larvicidal efficiency, with a remarkable mortality rate of 93.3% at 2.5 mg/L, a substantial improvement over evodiamine (10.0% at 10 mg/L), matrine (10.0% at 200 mg/L), and rotenone (30.0% at 200 mg/L). In the case of P. xylostella, compounds 21m and 21o displayed heightened larvicidal activity, boasting LC 50 values of 9.37 × 10 –2 and 0.13 mg/L, respectively, surpassing that of evodiamine (13.41 mg/L), matrine (291.78 mg/L), and rotenone (18.39 mg/L). A structure–activity relationship analysis unveiled that evodiamine-based derivatives featuring a cyclopropyl sulfonyl group at the nitrogen atom of the B ring and a fluorine atom in the E ring exhibited more potent larvicidal effects. This finding was substantiated by calcium imaging experiments and molecular docking, which suggested that 21m could target insect RyRs, including resistant mutant RyRs of P. xylostella (G4946E and I4790M), with higher affinity than chlorantraniliprole (CHL). Additionally, cytotoxicity assays highlighted that the potent compounds 21i , 21m , and 21o displayed favorable selectivity and low toxicity toward nontarget organisms. Consequently, compound 21m emerges as a promising candidate for further development as an insecticide targeting insect RyRs.
