مستخلص: Rape myths play a role in rape denialism, in which individuals deny the prevalence and severity of sexual assault. This project aimed to address two common rape myths: that rape is uncommon and its effects are exaggerated. To test these claims, we explored two archival samples consisting of undergraduate women. Study 1, a 5-year chart review of university counseling center intake forms (n = 883), demonstrated that 30.2% of clients had experienced "sexual violence," "sexual contact without consent," or both. Study 2, a re-analysis of an emerging adulthood resilience survey dataset (n = 359), demonstrated that 20.6% of subjects had a history of sexual assault, and that those women reported lower life satisfaction and more severe psychological symptoms than those who did not. These findings are in line with previous literature debunking harmful rape myths that contribute to the perpetuation of rape culture. Our data help validate these rape notions as mythical; rape is indeed common and devastating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: A burgeoning body of research suggests that nuanced sociocultural factors influence college women's health. Feminine norms, or the beliefs and expectations of what it means to be a woman, is one important factor that may help explain psychological distress. Emerging research has found that conformity to feminine norms is significantly associated with several health outcomes including substance use and eating disorder symptomatology. Guided by the gender role strain paradigm, we examined the role of conformity to feminine norms on psychological distress among college women. Data was collected from 1,700 female undergraduate women attending one university in Southern California with a mean age of 20.18. The sample consisted of 76.8% Asian American women and 23.2% white women. We conducted regression analyses to examine the association between nine feminine norms (i.e., Sweet and Nice, Relationship, Thinness, Modesty, Domestic, Care for Children, Romantic Relationship, Sexual Fidelity, and Invest in Appearance) and psychological distress. Findings revealed that the feminine norms of Modesty, Appearance and Thinness were positively associated with psychological distress, while age, Children, and Relationship decreased risk of distress. This study provides evidence of the nuanced ways in which conformity to feminine norms is associated with psychological distress. The results of this study highlight how researchers and practitioners may consider examining how specific feminine norms are associated with psychological distress instead of homogenizing all aspects of femininity. مستخلص: The increase in youth and adult use of pornography has led to increased research on the possible effects and implications of such use. A few prior studies have examined the relationship between age at first exposure to pornography and related problems later in life, including more problematic use of pornography. The current study used a sample of 924 males and females at a university in the Southern United States to examine the relationship between age and type of first pornography exposure to problematic use of pornography in young adulthood. Results indicated significant relationships between age at first exposure, first exposure type, and problematic pornography use in young adulthood. The findings highlight the importance of early intervention around pornography exposure and the causes of intentional pornography use at early ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: This qualitative study sought to provide a deeper understanding of the experiences of college women who had been bullied while in middle school and/or high school. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 college women between the ages of 18–23 who were asked to describe the bullying behaviors they experienced, the impact it had on them at the time, and the ongoing impact it has had on their college experience. All the women shared stories of being bullied by other girls. The bullying behaviors experienced were divided into four categories: verbal, physical, exclusion, and cyberbullying. When describing the impact, the most common themes were negative emotional responses (including experiencing anxiety, feeling very alone, having a very low sense of self, and fears of making friends or trusting new people), as well as avoidance (avoiding extracurricular events, certain classes, cafeteria). Most stated that, particularly in their first year of college, they felt the ongoing negative emotional impact of being bullied, in terms of social anxiety and a lack of self-confidence, however they also talked about the positive gains and growth they had made by overcoming being bullied. Recommendations for what middle school and high schools, as well as parents, can do to work to reduce bullying behaviors are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Objectives: The primary objectives were to determine the proportion of modern menstrual method (MMM) users among college going women in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu; and to estimate the unmet needs associated with use of MMMs in comparison with other menstrual hygiene methods (MHMs). We also assessed the factors that determine MMM use among college going women. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among college going women in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, India between October 2022 and January 2023 using a purpose predesigned, pretested, semi-structured proforma that included validated Menstrual Practice Needs Scale (MPNS-36). Results: Only 1.4% of the study participants used MMMs – menstrual cups (1.3%) and tampons (0.1%). Sanitary pads were the most common MHM of choice (96.3%); of which majority (98.6%) used disposable pads and more than half (50.4%) used non-biodegradable pads. Importantly, one in six (16.5%) were not aware of nature of sanitary pads (biodegradable or nonbiodegradable) used. The unmet needs associated with MMMs (menstrual cups and tampons) were significantly lower than that for other MHMs (including sanitary pads), in particular, the unmet material and home environment needs, unmet material reliability concerns, unmet reuse needs and unmet reuse insecurity. However, we found no significant difference between MMMs, sanitary pads and other MHMs in terms of unmet transport, college environment, change and disposal insecurity needs. The significant predictors of use of MMMs were age (more than 21 years of age), residence (urban), type of stay (off campus including home), socioeconomic status (upper), fathers' and mothers' education (high school and above), and presence of personal income. Discussions with friends (or peers) both before and after menarche regarding menstruation resulted in higher adoption of modern menstrual methods. Conclusion: MMMs provided comparative advantage with lesser unmet needs for material reliability and reuse insecurity concerns, particularly in home environment. However, none of the MHMs fulfilled the user expectations for transport and disposal insecurity concerns, particularly outdoors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Recruitment and retention are two of the greatest challenges for police agencies, community members, and leaders. Recently, agencies have faced shallow applicant pools and significant declines in retention longevity. Concerns over excessive force, especially fatal incidents in minority communities, have fostered anti-police sentiment, reduced the prestige of police work, and elevated negative perceptions of risk in policing careers. These factors contribute to recruitment and retention woes, especially in women, who often harbour reservations about pursuing careers in a male-dominated work environment. Using data collected from a series of six single-sex focus groups, this study assesses the challenges faced in recruitment of college educated females and their attitudes toward policing as a profession. Findings reveal support for theories of person-vocation fit as primary motivations and barriers to careers in policing for women. Respondent concerns centre around personal interest, family and media pressures, and perceptions about the nature of police work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Research suggests that exposure to microaggressions diminishes cognitive resources. Using in vivo experimental methodology, we found that engagement in a breathing exercise may mask the effects of cognitive depletion in Black college women who are exposed to racial microaggressions. Sixty-one Black college women were randomly assigned to one of four conditions in which a microaggressive script and coping suggestion were crossed. Participants who were exposed to microaggressions enacted by a white research assistant and asked to wait were more depleted than those who were not exposed to microaggressions at all. Participants who heard the microaggressive language and were prompted to cope were marginally less depleted than those who were exposed without prompting to engage in a coping exercise. These findings align with prior findings that racially hostile university environments may have harmful consequences on the cognitive functioning of Black women, but engagement in coping may diminish these effects. Implications, limitations, and future research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: Despite the consequences of alcohol use, it continues showing a high incidence among college students. Besides, the increasing presence of women in risk alcohol patterns calls for a gender-sensitive approach to design specific actions. Some variables have been analyzed as underlying alcohol consumption (expectations and motives). This paper assesses the type and influence of both variables on female university alcohol consumers at different levels of risk. Five hundred four college women were assessed using the Spanish adaptations of the Expectancy Questionnaire, the Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised, and the AUDIT. We determine the unique contributions of expectancies, motives, and the presence of binge drinking (BD) to the pattern of risky drinking. The percentage of variance explained by risky drinking is 37.7%. Negative expectancies (20.4%) are the most explanatory variables, followed by enhancement motives (10.4%). Interventions with university women should focus on their negative expectancies, in addition to addressing for improvement, coping with depression, and conformity motives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
