الوصف: This work seeks to help students in improving their first research reports, based on natural language processing techniques. We present a Conclusion model that includes three schemes: Goal Connectedness, Judgment and Speculation. These subsystems try to account for the main expected features in conclusions, specifically the Connectedness with the general objective of the research, the evidence of value Judgments, and the presence of Future work as a result of the student reflection after the inquiry. The article details the schemes, a validation of the approach in an annotated corpus, and a pilot test with undergraduate students. Results of a prior validation indicate that student writings indeed adhere to such features, especially at graduate level. Statistical results of the pilot test showed that undergraduate students in an experimental group achieved improved conclusion content when compared with the control group.

الوصف: Often, academic programs require students to write a thesis or research proposal. The review of such texts is a heavy load, especially at initial stages. Natural Language Processing techniques are employed to mine existing corpora of research proposals and theses to further assess drafts of college students in information technologies and computer science. In this chapter, we focus on examining specific sections of student writings, first seeking for the connection of ideas identifying the pattern of entities. Subsequently, we analyze the justification and conclusions sections, studying features such as the presence of importance in justification and the level of speculative words in a conclusion section. Experiments and results for the different analyses are explained in detail. Each analysis is independent and could allow the student to analyze their text with a set of tools with the aim of improving their writing.

الوصف: Lexical Richness is a competence that students acquire while advancing in education. This article presents results analyzing lexical richness of drafts of students, in terms of lexical density, variety, and sophistication. A computational model allows reviewing some essential elements in drafts. Results show that there exists a difference in lexical richness between graduate and undergraduate texts, and that sophistication is the measure that best differentiates them. We also report results of a pilot test. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Comput Appl Eng Educ 23:638–644, 2015; View this article online at wileyonlinelibrary.com/journal/cae; DOI 10.1002/cae.21638

الوصف: Writing research findings turns out to be hard work. For college students, the complexity is increased by the lack of experience in writing scientific texts. Defining the general objective allows students to set forward the way for the development of the thesis. One of the three questions suggested by the authors of methodology books; “What will you do?”, serves as a guide for the objective formulation. In this work we developed an Answer Identification Model to approach such question, employing a Language Model and an Answer Scanning Method. This model can be used to identify answers to open questions that seek to reveal specific content. We are reporting initial results of the analysis of a test collection in Computer and Information Technologies.

الوصف: Argumentation during the academic life is a critical skill when writing. This skill is needed to communicate clearly ideas and to convince the reader of the presented claims. However, not many students are good arguers and this is a skill difficult to master. This paper presents advances in the development of an argument assessment module. Such module supports students to identify argumentative paragraphs and determine the level of argumentation in the text. The task is achieved employing machine learning techniques with lexical features such as unigrams, bigrams, and argumentative markers categories. We based the module on an annotated collection of student writings, that serves for training. We performed an initial experiment to evaluate argumentative paragraph identification in the justification section of theses, reaching encouraging results, when compared against previously proposed approaches. The module is one component of a Thesis Writing Tutor, an Internet-based learning software for academic writing.

الوصف: At "Universidad de la Sierra", projects of the end of a course are conducted. These projects are requested to have the structure of a research paper. In order to improve the quality of the assignment and guide the students in developing such work, an intelligent tutoring system was used. In this paper, we show a web-based intelligent tutoring system (ITS) to provide student advice in structuring research projects. We propose a student model based on a network to follow the progress of each student in the development of the project and personalized feedback on each assessment. This tutor includes a module for assessing the lexical richness, which is done in terms of lexical density, lexical variety, and sophistication. We present the empirical evaluation results indicate that students found this tool useful and improve their writing.

الوصف: Guiding students on writing is a hard and time consuming chore for advisors, since it requires several iterations before achieving an acceptable level. Normally, when professors advise students close to graduation, most questions are about the structure of the thesis project. Issues such as the correct wording or abuse of certain terms within a title, problem statement, objectives and justification become the main tasks of the instructor. In this paper, we present a web-based intelligent tutoring system (ITS) to provide student advice in structuring research projects. We propose a student model based on a network to follow the progress of each student in the development of the project and personalized feedback on each assessment. This tutor includes a module for assessing the lexical richness, which is done in terms of lexical density, lexical variety, and sophistication. We also establish the methodology for future testing with undergraduate students.

الوصف: The proposal draft is the first step to achieve a degree by students in many educational institutions. This proposal is transformed into a thesis after several revisions by an academic adviser. In addition, each proposal must comply with requirements of institutional guidelines. In this paper, we explore a learning approach to identify essential elements: importance, necessity, convenience, and benefits; that are expected to appear in a justification section of a proposal or thesis draft. We present a method based on a Language Model approach. Preliminary results show that the elements of necessity, importance, and benefits obtained acceptable results, considering that this task is complex for an academic adviser. The identification of convenience requires further improvement. A language model based on n-grams showed more consistent and better results than a model based on neural networks. Part of speech tagging contributes to improve results in both language model techniques.
