الوصف: This paper attempts to capture the determination of the South African exchange rate in a theoretically plausible model with reliable forecasting ability. A sticky-price, Dornbusch-type monetary model of the rand/dollar exchange rate is proposed. The three-step Engle and Yoo cointegration procedure is applied and the test results indicate that the nominal exchange rate is cointegrated with relative real output, the relative money supplies and the inflation differential. An error correction model is estimated and shocks are applied to each of the long-run variables. Some policy implications are derived from these sensitivity tests. Finally, a fundamental equilibrium exchange rate (FEER) for the rand/dollar rate is defined and the FEER values are estimated until the year 2000.

الوصف: Background Congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAMs) are a heterogenous collection of congenital lung malformations, often diagnosed prenatally. The Stocker Type III CPAM is a rare CPAM sub-type, and, when large, may be associated with hydrops. Furthermore, reports of CPAM management which may include surgical resection in extreme preterm infants are limited. Case presentation We report a case of a female neonate born at 28 weeks of gestation with severe respiratory distress and diffuse pulmonary opacification on the right concerning for a large congenital lung lesion. This lesion was not detected on routine antenatal imaging, and she did not have clinical findings of associated hydrops. Her respiratory status improved dramatically after surgical resection of a mass at 12 day of age. The mass was consistent pathologically with a Stocker Type III CPAM. Lung expansion showed subsequent improvement at 16 months of age. Conclusions Our case describes a preterm neonate with severe respiratory distress that was found postnatally to have a large, unilateral congenital lung lesion despite a normal prenatal ultrasound. Additionally, this lesion required excision early in life due to severity of respiratory compromise. This case highlights that rare congenital lung lesions, like this rare sub-type of CPAM, should remain a diagnostic consideration in neonates with severe respiratory distress. Early lung resection for CPAM in preterm infants is not well described and the favorable outcomes of this case help expand perspectives on potential management strategies.

الوصف: We report a case of a bladder hemangioma in a pediatric patient. A 2-year-old Caucasian female presented with intermittent gross hematuria and protrusion of beefy red tissue near the vaginal introitus when straining. On cystoscopy, we discovered a wide-based vermiform mass. Transurethral resection of the bladder mass was performed. Based on the histological findings of the tissue resected, a diagnosis of capillary hemangioma of the bladder was made. Despite their rarity, bladder hemangiomas should be considered in the differential in children with gross hematuria.

الوصف: Objectives Adherence to injury prevention programmes in football remains low, which is thought to drastically reduce the effects of injury prevention programmes. Reasons why (medical) staff and players implement injury prevention programmes, have been investigated, but player’s characteristics and perceptions about these programmes might influence their adherence. Therefore, this study investigated the relationships between player’s characteristics and adherence and between player’s perceptions and adherence following an implemented injury prevention programme. Methods Data from 98 of 221 football players from the intervention group of a cluster randomised controlled trial concerning hamstring injury prevention were analysed. Results Adherence was better among older and more experienced football players, and players considered the programme more useful, less intense, more functional and less time-consuming. Previous hamstring injuries, educational level, the programme’s difficulty and intention to continue the exercises were not significantly associated with adherence. Conclusion These player’s characteristics and perceptions should be considered when implementing injury prevention programmes.

الوصف: This environment contains the data and the R code for the purpose of replication, reanalysis, new analysis, and reinterpretation of the study results. The data sets "DataPlayer1" and "DataPlayer2" consist of psychological and physiological time series across one football season of two individual professional youth players. More detailed information about what kind of data we collected and how can be retrieved from the article.

الوصف: Large theropod dinosaurs are often reconstructed with their marginal dentition exposed because of the enormous size of their teeth and their phylogenetic association to crocodylians. We tested this hypothesis using a multiproxy approach. Regressions of skull length and tooth size for a range of theropods and extant varanid lizards confirm that complete coverage of theropod dinosaur teeth with extraoral tissues (gingiva and labial scales) is both plausible and consistent with patterns observed in living ziphodont amniotes. Analyses of dental histology from crocodylians and theropod dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus rex , further indicate that the most likely condition was complete coverage of the marginal dentition with extraoral tissue when the mouth was closed. This changes our perceptions about the appearance and oral configuration of these iconic predators and has broad implications for our interpretations of other terrestrial animals with large teeth.

الوصف: The coexistence of multiple species competing for a finite set of resources is a widely debated topic in community ecology. Species with strongly overlapping niches are expected to drive each other towards exclusion, but such species may also coexist if they have similar competitive abilities. This compromise can lead to a peculiar pattern of clumped coexistence, where multiple species share similar niches, leaving gaps open in the theoretically available niche space. Large mammal herbivores may be a good example of this, where species' dietary niches clump as either grazers, browsers, or intermediate-feeders, rather than being continuously distributed over the resource gradient. Here, we develop a model of such emergent neutrality amongst species competing for a set of predefined resources each distributed along a finite niche axis. The model is commensurate with stable isotope niches, thus allowing us to compare its predictions with empirical evidence for changes in community niche structure over evolutionary time. We present stable carbon and oxygen isotope evidence for six discontinuous Late Quaternary assemblages from the central interior of South Africa, demonstrating the emergence of a clumped niche structure from an initial pattern of strongly overlapping diets. We show that species tend to cluster on parts of the niche axis where resource availability is highest, mirroring the proliferation of grazer species as landscapes became more grass-dominated. However, the presence of competition means that species’ niches continue to differentiate, explaining the persistence of browser and intermediate-feeder species even in these open, predominantly treeless landscapes. These results highlight that species interactions are a necessary factor for robust inferences about the evolutionary dynamics of palaeocommunities.
