    الوصف: Magnesium-ion batteries could be competitive with lithium-ion batteries, but the reversible intercalation of magnesium in the framework of the host material needs to be verified. A concentration cell was built by using electrodes with different concentrations of magnesium ions in the cubic spinel MgxMn2O4. For this purpose, firstly cations were partially extracted from MgMn2O4 by acid-treatment. This concentration cell was used to test the reversible intercalation of magnesium and the effect of the cationic vacancies. The theoretical results of the percolation energy can explain the lower polarization experimentally observed in the voltage curve of the acid-treated sample. The reversible capacity (ca. 115 mA h g−1) is preserved after charge–discharge cycling.

    الوصف: Rechargeable magnesium batteries attract lots of attention because of their high safety and low cost compared to lithium batteries, and it is needed to develop more efficient electrode materials. Although MgMn2O4 is a promising material for the positive electrode in Mg rechargeable batteries, it usually exhibits poor cyclability. To improve the electrochemical behavior, we have prepared nanoparticles of MgMn2-yFeyO4. The XRD results have confirmed that when Mn3+ (Jahn-Teller ion) ions are replaced by Fe3+ (non-Jahn-Teller ion), the resulting MgMn2-yFeyO4 is a cubic phase. The structure and theoretical voltage are theoretically calculated by using the DFT method. The obtained samples have been chemically treated in acid solution for partial demagnesiation, and it is observed that the presence of iron inhibits the deinsertion of Mg through disproportionation and favors the exchange reaction. The electrochemical behavior in non-aqueous magnesium cells has been explored.

    الوصف: During the process of recognizing and selecting products on display shelves, it is essential to be able to identify efficiently and effectively different typologies of products to avoid any inconvenience or any serious confusion (specially, diabetics). In this context, the role of visual representation is fundamental.This almost-experimental research highlights insight into this issue and addresses the concurrence of graphic elements, as for instance a text with a chromatic marker, in containers’ design.     مستخلص: MDA5, encoded by the IFIH1gene, is a cytoplasmic sensor of viral RNAs that triggers interferon (IFN) antiviral responses. Common and rare IFIH1 variants have been associated with the risk of type 1 diabetes and other immune-mediated disorders, and with the outcome of viral diseases. Variants associated with reduced IFN expression would increase the risk for severe viral disease. The MDA5/IFN pathway would play a critical role in the response to SARS-CoV-2 infection mediating the extent and severity of COVID-19. Here, we genotyped a cohort of 477 patients with critical ICU COVID-19 (109 death) for three IFIH1 functional variants: rs1990760 (p.Ala946Thr), rs35337543 (splicing variant, intron 8 + 1G > C), and rs35744605 (p.Glu627Stop). The main finding of our study was a significant increased frequency of rs1990760 C-carriers in early-onset patients (< 65 years) (p = 0.01; OR = 1.64, 95%CI = 1.18–2.43). This variant was also increased in critical vs. no-ICU patients and in critical vs. asymptomatic controls. The rs35744605 C variant was associated with increased blood IL6 levels at ICU admission. The rare rs35337543 splicing variant showed a trend toward protection from early-onset critical COVID-19. In conclusion, IFIH1 variants associated with reduced gene expression and lower IFN response might contribute to develop critical COVID-19 with an age-dependent effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

    الوصف: A total of 72 Merino breed male lambs were used in this work, to study the effect of the space allowance during transport [(SA): low (SAL: 0.16 m2/animal; n=24); medium (SAM: 20 m2/animal; n=24); high (SAH: 0.30 m2/animal; n=24)], and the management during 18 h lairage [(TL): fasting (TL-FAST; n=36) vs feeding (TL-FEED; n=36)] on carcass microbial contamination (total viable count, Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas) and meat quality. Carcasses contamination determination was carried out by swabbing (neck, flank and rump). Meat quality was assessed by pH, colour coordinates, drip loss (DL), shear force (SF) ad lipid oxidation. SA did not have effect on carcass microbiological quality. TL caused a significant effect on total viable count and Pseudomonas spp values. Flank was the most contaminated site. SAL-FEED group showed the highest values of drip loss and lipid oxidation. At 24 h post-mortem, pH values were the highest in fasted lambs. At 7 d post-mortem the lowest pH was found in SAM-FAST group while the highest in SAM-FEED. TL had no effect on SF, DL neither on lipid oxidation values. These results could help to meat industry to decide the best management as in the transportation as during lairage before lambs slaughter.
