الوصف: Research on choirs and other forms of group singing has been conducted for several decades and there has been a recent focus on the potential health and well-being benefits, particularly in amateur singers. Experimental, quantitative, and qualitative studies show evidence of a range of biopsychosocial and well-being benefits to singers; however, there are many challenges to rigor and replicability. To support the advances of research into group singing, the authors met and discussed theoretical and methodological issues to be addressed in future studies. The authors are from five countries and represent the following disciplinary perspectives: music psychology, music therapy, community music, clinical psychology, educational and developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology, health psychology, social psychology, and public health. This article summarizes our collective thoughts in relation to the priority questions for future group singing research, theoretical frameworks, potential solutions for design and ethical challenges, quantitative measures, qualitative methods, and whether there is scope for a benchmarking set of measures across singing projects. With eight key recommendations, the article sets an agenda for best practice research on group singing.

الوصف: Whilst an established aid to personal development, coaching is still in its early stages of maturity. So too, outside of the field of education, is the concept of learning teams. This paper concerns coach development via two complementary coaches working as a learning team when conducting live coaching sessions. It proposes a way in which practitioners might enhance their continuous professional development - and therefore their service to their clients - by making an increasingly efficient and effective use of their everyday work. It is not concerned with team coaching, although many of the principles will be the same.

الوصف: Background: A universal consensus regarding standardized pain outcomes does not exist. The personalized pain goal has been suggested as a clinically relevant outcome measure. Aim: To assess the feasibility of obtaining a personalized pain goal and to compare a clinically based personalized pain goal definition versus a research-based study definition for stable pain. Design: Prospective longitudinal descriptive study. Measures: The attending physician completed routine assessments, including a personalized pain goal and the Edmonton Classification System for Cancer Pain, and followed patients daily until stable pain control, death, or discharge. Stable pain for cognitively intact patients was defined as pain intensity less than or equal to desired pain intensity goal (personalized pain goal definition) or pain intensity ⩽3 (Edmonton Classification System for Cancer Pain study definition) for three consecutive days with Setting/participants: A total of 300 consecutive advanced cancer patients were recruited from two acute care hospitals and a tertiary palliative care unit. Results: In all, 231/300 patients (77%) had a pain syndrome; 169/231 (73%) provided a personalized pain goal, with 113/169 (67%) reporting a personalized pain goal ⩽3 (median = 3, range = 0–10). Using the personalized pain goal definition as the gold standard, sensitivity and specificity of the Edmonton Classification System for Cancer Pain definition were 71.3% and 98.5%, respectively. For mild (0–3), moderate (4–6), and severe (7–10) pain, the highest sensitivity was for moderate pain (90.5%), with high specificity across all three categories (95%–100%). Conclusion: The personalized pain goal is a feasible outcome measure for cognitively intact patients. The Edmonton Classification System for Cancer Pain definition closely resembles patient-reported personalized pain goals for stable pain and would be appropriate for research purposes. For clinical pain management, it would be important to include the personalized pain goal as standard practice.

الوصف: This chapter provides an overview of international research evidence on the value of singing for the well-being and health of older people. It draws on a number of recent systematic reviews of the literature on singing, health and well-being, especially studies published over the last ten years. Particular attention is given to the value of singing for older people with long-term health conditions, including respiratory illness, Parkinson’s disease and stroke, people affected directly or indirectly by cancer and finally dementia. It notes an encouraging trend towards larger-scale, controlled studies with an emphasis on measurable outcomes supplemented by the gathering of narrative accounts from older people on the impacts that engagement in singing has had on their lives and a sense of personal and social well-being.

الوصف: A growing body of research demonstrates that regular group singing can have measurable benefits for mental and social wellbeing. The value of singing for physical wellbeing and health is less clear. One promising line of inquiry has explored the value of singing for breathing, and particularly for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To date three controlled trials provide evidence of acceptability and enjoyment of singing by people with COPD and have shown improvements in self-reported health status, although little evidence of improvements in lung function and exercise capability. A recent community-based feasibility study suggests, however, that the interventions in earlier studies may have been too short for positive physical benefits to emerge. Further, more robust community-based research on singing and respiratory illness is called for to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of singing as a treatment intervention.

الوصف: We investigate whether pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA)-specific secretory (S)-IgA antibodies (Abs) induced by nasal vaccine is necessary for the prevention of streptococcal colonization and their clearance. IgA deficient (IgA-/-) and control mice were nasally immunized four times at weekly intervals with PspA plus flt3 ligand plasmid (pFL). One week after the last immunization, PspA-specific S-IgA and IgG Ab as well as Th1- and Th2-type cytokine responses by CD4+ T cells were determined. Further, mice were challenged with Streptococcus pneumoniae (EF3030) via the nasal route. Five days after challenge, nasal washes (NWs) and nasal passages (NPs) were collected and the numbers of bacterial colonies were determined. Mice nasally immunized with PspA plus pFL showed significantly increased levels of Th2 cell-mediated PspA-specific S-IgA and IgG Ab responses in NWs and plasma when compared with naïve mice. Thus, these vaccinated wild type mice showed essentially no bacteria in the nasal cavity. Although IgA-/- mice given nasal PspA plus pFL had significantly high levels of PspA-specific IgG Abs, high numbers of bacteria were detected in NWs and NPs. Further, nasal PspA plus pFL effectively reduced pre-existing S. pneumoniae in the nasal cavity of wild-type, but not IgA-/- mice. These results show that PspA-specific S-IgA Abs play important roles in the prevention of S. pneumoniae colonization and clearance. Supported by NIH grants AG025873 and DE12242.
